November 18, Sunday

November 18, Sunday

It is still raining off and on today, but I’ve decided to go out and explore Rotorua and visit the local “Rotorua Museum of Art and History, Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa”.  The motel where I am staying is close to the shopping area downtown and only a 10 minute walk to the museum.
Rotorua Bath House, now the Rotorua Museum
It is located in a once famous geothermal spa which offered therapeutic treatments to visitors from all over the world. The “Rotorua Bath House” opened in 1908. Within only a few years, the building and its pipes started to deteriorate due to the sulfur content in the water. Plaster was coming off the walls, silverware tarnished, mold appeared on the tiled walls and floors. It fell into disrepair in the 1940s and stayed that way until the city took it over in the 1960s.

 Sculpture outside the museum

The lobby of the Rotorua Bath House
I visited the galleries in one wing first, sorry, no photography allowed and then what has been kept of the Bath House in the other wing, where people came to take “The Cure”.

 Beautiful sculptures throughout the building

 The sunken baths

The more traditional baths

Unfortunately the roof top was closed due to “inclement weather” so I did not get to take pictures of the town of Rotorua from up there.

Wonder if they have ever used the location for a period piece  movie set?

From the Museum, I walked through a beautiful rose garden,
This looks more like a native totem pole from Canada!

 Almost black roses

They all looked beautiful with the rain drops still on their petals and leaves
I then made my way around Lakefront Drive to finally get a glimpse of Lake Rotorua.

Black swan with its chicks out for a Sunday paddle on the lake

Lake Rotorua    Rhyolitic eruptions with large amounts of water tend to cause violent eruptions, producing calderas, such as Lake Taupo and Lake Rotorua.”

View of the back tail carving
I then walked the 10 blocks back to the motel, stopping on the way to have a late lunch / early dinner at the “Kuriouse Kiwi”.Had a delicious lamb burger and tried a Kiwi Mojito(made with kiwi fruit !not the bird)

I had been thinking of doing the cable car ride, but it was very windy and cold and it kept raining off and on all day, so I decided to just go back to the motel instead and call it a day.
