A Great Egret on the shore
A statue on the waterfront
The mini bus picked me up at 1 pm for my tour of Cairns and the surrounding area. Our first stop was at St. Monica’s Cathedral.
one wall of Stained glass windows, representing the creation of the world.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth
The colours on some of the pieces are simply amazing. I've never seen anything as beautiful.
At the back of the church is a full wall depicting the ocean near Cairns
Our next stop was at the Cairns Botanical Gardens
I thought these were plastic lanterns, but they are actually plants, and one of them has a bloom!
A spiny tree that our guide and bus driver is showing us
No idea what this plant is, but the berry (or flower) is quite interesting
Wow. I took a picture of it all by itself, but you couldn't see how big it was, so I took another one.
We then drove out to the countryside to Lake Placid
This is a tree on the shores of lake Placid. Can you see the sign at the top of this tree? That is the height of the flood levels in February 1999.
Palm Cove
There is a woman and her child on the beach.... gives it a bit of perspective.
We drove back into Cairns on the “Captain Cook Highway”.
Sunset from the streets of Cairns
I walked around Cairns for about one hour before getting
picked up for my afternoon excursion around Cairns and the surrounding region

From the top of a nearby mountain, we get a great view of Cairns and the surrounding suburbs
We stopped at an Opal store, where they had a display of how they look when they are found in situ.
Opals “Many millions of years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth the processes of creation forged a unique gem which somehow appeared to entrap fire and light and thus opals were born.”
Our last stop of the day was at Palm Cove a few kilometers north of Cairns. This is where you have to come if you want to swim in the ocean, since you cannot do it in Cairns.Palm Cove
