June 5, Tuesday

June 5, Tuesday

I wake up early to the gentle rocking of the boat.  Lindsay gets up to go read on the top deck and I just stay in bed reading until we are called for breakfast disembark and get back on the bus for our 3 hour drive back to Ha Noi.

How is this for a narrow house !  And it's out in the countryside, so I guess the property taxes according to the frontage of your house applies to all areas in Vietnam... or at least to the northern area.

Beautiful flower arrangement in one of the towns we cross along the way

 Now that's a cute family.

There are lots of pottery shops as well as statuary shops on this highway.

Finally, a GREAT picture of what I've been trying to explain about doing double duty when you own a roto-tiller.

Lots of people out in their fields.

What is this all about ?   I checked the Internet
“The Vietnam-Canada Vocational School, put into operation in February 2009, is Canada's first wholly-invested vocational training project and is expected to train 3,000 - 5,000 labourers each year. VCS partners with CPI Training to enhance their ability to train students for industry in Vietnam and around the world.”
How nice is that ! Good for Canada.

Crossing a wide river on the way back.  It could be the Red River that we are criss-crossing

We stop at another centre where people with disabilities work. This time, the workers are all deaf.

As we near Ha Noi, we start seeing some apartment buildings

We pass a city with a nice lake in it.

We get our same rooms again at the Hong Ngoc Hotel and Lyndsey and Melissa still agree to share and leave me in my private room where my bags are waiting.   We have time to shower, change and relax before meeting to go and see the famous water puppet show.

The orchestra plays all through the show, and they even provide the voices for the puppet stories.

This lady is playing a "one-string" musical instrument.  It makes a beautiful sound and is amazing to hear.   I've checked the Internet and found out it is called a Dan Bau.  If you want to know more about it or hear what it sounds like, check this out.

We see a variety of stories played out by various puppets

It is quite nice.  Not really what I was expecting, but glad I came to see it.

At the end, we see the dragon show, returning to the heavens, and they puppeteers.
We then go for dinner on one of the main streets of the old city.

The streets are busy.  The people are just sitting around, watching other people go by.

This is the street where the "Little Hanoi" restaurant was located

And this is the delicious meal I ordered.

Most of the group opt to stop and have a few beers before returning to the hotel; just sitting on plastic chairs on a street corner.  To noisy and humid for me, so I simply walk the few blocks back to the hotel for another much needed shower and rest for the night.
