June 16, Saturday

June 16, Saturday

This morning we are up early for breakfast at 7 am and leave by mini-bus for Siem Reap.
During the drive this morning, as I look at more houses, I notice that most of them have a roof adornment,  similar to the ones I've seen on the houses in Peru.  "Same, same,  but different!"
Some houses actually have glass window panes, and adorments.

Wow, check out the roof on this hotel.

Market area outside of Siem Reap

There are photos of the Royal Family everywhere

This is the hotel where we will be staying; the Angkor Way Hotel

I love to take these pictures of little kids on motorbikes.  Check out where the helmet is kept... during the ride.
We arrived in the early afternoon in Siem Reap and our first order of business was to go to the Main Entrance to the Angkor Temples area to get our photos taken and obtain our 3-day pass.  After that we went to the Angkor Way Hotel where we will be staying.  It is a little out of the way, and we will have to take tuk-tuks to get to and from the downtown area in the evenings.

Siem Reap means “Thais defeated”; you got to love it.  We are told that the area has flipped hands many times with what is now Thailand and the Khmers who lived in this area.  The city is big and has grown immensely in the last 10 years because of the tourist trade.
We have some down time when we arrive and there is a pool at the back of the hotel. I’m sharing a room with Melissa and we decide to put on our swim suits and head down for lunch by the pool side. We were there only a few hours before the rain came down and I took advantage of the time to rest in the room.
Scott had booked a couple of tuk-tuks to take us to the downtown area for dinner, so off we went to Pub Street !

Yes, it really is called Pub Street !   and yes, it is full of pubs and restaurants.

 Pub street is always busy

We have time to walk around to the area called the "night market" and I do some browsing, but no purchasing.

This is the restaurant where he had our pre-dinner drinks before going up to the second floor for our meal and dinner show.   Does the scene look familiar to my Ottawa fans?  Kind of like the restaurants in the market area?   Well OK, maybe not.  “Same, same, but different!”

We were treated to the “Apsara Show” with traditional dancing and costumes.   I managed to get some pictures, but many of the ones I tried to take were blurry because their dance movements were so fast and the lighting at times wasn't that great.

 Peacock dance

 Equus ?  Not quite.

Amazing costumes and great dancers

It was a great evening, we enjoyed lots of laughs, and as usual, I was one of the first to return to the hotel.  We were getting up extremely early the next morning to see the sun rise at Angkor Wat, and in any case,  I can’t hear very well at the best of times, and in a crowd with music and laughter in the background I can’t hear anything at all.
