April 12, Thursday

April 12, Thursday   (Happy Birthday Paul)

Early morning wakeup call at 6:30 so that our luggage is at the hotel door at 7:00 am.   Our bus for the airport leaves at 9:00 am for our flight to Tibet.
Views of the Himalayas from the plain.

We land early in the afternoon and after a one hour drive arrive in Lhasa.   We are staying at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel.  After checking in, we are given some free time to “acclimatize” to the heights.  Tibet is an “autonomous region” within the People’s Republic of China since 1965,  like Hong Kong and Macau.  Tibet’s population is approximately 2,740,000, with about 500,000 living in the Lhasa area.   The sunlight in Lhasa is so intense that the city is called Sunlight City, and we are warned to wear a lot of sunscreen.
Pictures from the drive into Lhasa
small town we pass along the way
 Beautiful wide highway
The river meanders and we can see where it has changed its flow
If you look in the distance, you can see a huge sand storm.
 Yaks in a field.
Kyichu River runs through iLhasa.  From the air, when we landed, we could see the many different paths the water can take through the valley.  Our local guide here is another N.P.   He provides us with a lot of information during the drive from the airport and again that evening when we go for dinner.

Beautiful views of the mountains surrounding Lhasa
